Coldplay’s new surprise in “Higher Power”

In a surprising yet somewhat expected turn of events, Coldplay has released a new single titled "Higher Power" that channels the unmistakable sounds of the 80s. Over the past couple of years, the 80s revival has been a prevailing trend in music, with artists like Dua Lipa and The Weeknd embracing the nostalgic sound. It was only a matter of time before a band like Coldplay jumped on the bandwagon. While I initially had reservations, especially considering their previous album, "Everyday Life," which diverged from modern pop music and their usual style, Coldplay took a risk that paid off magnificently.

The song exudes a contagious sense of fun from start to finish. It feels like every element was produced using vintage 80s gear, from the instruments to the compressors. The track's cheesy 80s vibe adds a vibrant quality, with cadences and melodies reminiscent of that era. It wouldn't be surprising if this were a hidden gem from an album like Peter Gabriel's "So"; it carries echoes of late-Pink Floyd, particularly with Chris Martin's vocals bearing a resemblance to David Gilmour's. The addition of a choir, predominantly featuring female voices, enhances the charm of both Martin's vocals and the overall sound. The chorus is instantly captivating, with harmonies that soar alongside the melodies. The crystal-clear production, albeit limited by the vintage 80s sound, contributes to an authentic experience that perfectly captures the essence of the era.

"Higher Power" may not be new or in line with Coldplay's previous offerings, and one could argue that it's a gimmick. These statements hold some truth, but they don't diminish the fact that this is an outstanding song. It ventures into dance-pop territory, uncharted for Coldplay, and improves with each listen. Hidden secrets are waiting to be discovered within the instrumentation and production, while the groovy basslines, punchy drums, ethereal synths, and infectious vocal melodies keep you hooked.

This song is really catchy and we are giving it 4 out of 4 stars.
