New York Yankees Pitcher Domingo German completes first perfect game since 2012
On Wednesday night, Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees etched his name in the record books by throwing Major League Baseball's first perfect game in nearly 11 years.
The 30-year-old Germán dominated the Oakland Athletics, not allowing a single runner on base through hits, walks, or hit batters during the Yankees' commanding 11-0 victory on the road.
This remarkable feat marked the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history and the first since Félix Hernández of the Seattle Mariners achieved it against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 15, 2012.
In the ninth inning, after retiring Aledmy Diaz and Shea Langeliers, Germán induced Esteury Ruiz to hit a ground ball to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who made a flawless throw to first base, sealing the historic triumph.
With nine strikeouts among the 27 batters he retired, Germán extended his arms in celebration as his teammates rushed in to embrace him.
Expressing his excitement, Germán remarked through a translator in an interview with the YES Network, "When you think about something very unique in baseball, you know not many people have an opportunity to pitch a perfect game. To accomplish something like this in my career, you know it's something that I'm going to remember forever, be part of history."
As the first pitcher from the Dominican Republic to throw a perfect game, Germán dedicated his extraordinary performance to a recently deceased relative, finding inspiration in their memory.
"Unfortunately, two days ago an uncle of mine passed away, and... I cried a lot yesterday in the clubhouse. So I had him with me throughout the whole game. I was thinking about him... and it happened," Germán revealed. "This game is a tribute to him. He would have been so happy. He was always someone that really brought joy to our family, and it happened for him to watch it this way, from up there."
Germán's historic achievement served as a redemption from his recent struggles, as he had allowed 17 runs in just 5 1/3 innings over his previous two starts.
In May, Germán faced a 10-game suspension from MLB for violating the foreign substances regulations after being ejected from a game against the Toronto Blue Jays for using an illegal sticky substance.
Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka expressed his happiness for Germán, stating, "He's had a rough last couple starts, and he's kind of been dragging a little bit. And just for him to do this and get back to being himself – I kind of always felt out of anyone he has a really good chance to do something like this, and for it to all come together tonight is amazing."
With this win, the Yankees (44-36) currently stand 9.5 games behind the first-place team in the American League East. The Oakland Athletics hold the worst record in the league this season at 21-61.
