The Moonlight was shining on Kali Uchis in Sacramento
In a mesmerizing and sensuous performance, Kali Uchis captivated a packed audience at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA on September 24. With relentless energy, Uchis treated her fans to a mix of her greatest hits and tracks from her latest album, "Red Moon in Venus." It marked her triumphant return to headlining since 2019, and throughout the show, she exuded confidence, weaving a spell of enchantment with her bilingual R&B.
The performance carried a powerful message, rejecting the harmful stereotypes and expectations imposed on women by both the music industry and society. Instead, Uchis's concert celebrated feminine empowerment, embracing her sexuality and vulnerability as she expressed her true self.
Opening the Red Moon in Venus Pt. 2 tour was Dominican artist Tokischa. She did her thing on stage and expressing gratitude to the audience, humbly acknowledging that the fans were going to have a good time tonight with Kali Uchis.
As Kali Uchis took the stage to start her performance, it became immediately evident who the audience had come to witness. Above two staircases and three archways on the stage, a digital red moon ascended while ethereal music filled the air, prompting an enthusiastic roar from the audience. Bathed in a crimson glow, Uchis's dancers made a striking entrance, bearing a large, feathery prop. As the stage was bathed in blue light, Uchis herself emerged from within the prop, commencing her debut performance of her “Muñekita” track.
Accompanied by six dancers, positioned like devoted disciples on either side of her, Uchis assumed an almost divine presence, clad in a black cutout dress with flowing sheer sleeves. The stage design further embraced this theme of divinity, featuring white archways reminiscent of a Greco-Roman temple, creating a captivating visual depth. Behind the stage was a large screen that would change throughout the show. Sometimes the screen would change colors with different stars of lights, lightning, or split into multiple screens to show different angles of Uchis. At times, Uchis performed atop these archways, as if on a pedestal, while during more intimate and vulnerable songs, she found herself framed within one of the archways, leaning against its walls for support. The dancers seamlessly mirrored Uchis's movements, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that covered every inch of the stage.
Uchis began the show with a high-energy lineup of her most beloved tracks. "telepatía" seamlessly flowed into "See You Again," “Moonlight,” and "Worth the Wait," creating a whirlwind of hits that the crowd adored. Without pausing between songs, Uchis delivered an unwavering and captivating performance. In the middle of her set, she introduced fresh harmonies while gracefully traversing the stage in front of her dancers' intricate choreography. Uchis glided down one of the staircases and took center stage, absorbing the crowd's electrifying energy.
Uchis sang a few more debut tracks including, “Labios Mordidos” and “Te mata.” Dispensing with detailed descriptions of each song, Kali Uchis allowed the music itself to convey its essence. Her discography strikes a delicate balance between intimacy and danceability, and this harmony was mirrored in the show's setlist. The lighting design complemented the mood of each track: vibrant red lights and strobes illuminated Uchis during her lively songs like "Speed" or "Endlessly," transitioning to serene blue hues for the slower tunes such as "Melting," "Loner," or "I Wish You Roses." Uchis's six backup dancers matched her energy, affording her the freedom to command the stage during these mellower moments.
One of our favorite parts of the show was when she sang her own version of “Piensa en mi” by Grupo Mojado. The whole arena sang every word with her, it was very surreal. Uchis outfit was beautiful as she wore a black dress with black boots, black gloves, white pearls around her neck and hula hoop earrings.
These tranquil interludes provided a glimpse into Uchis's more personal side. Before launching into "Loner," she candidly confessed that she had always been an introverted person. It was in these rare moments of vulnerability that her openness resonated most deeply.
Overall, it was a great atmosphere. Kali Uchis had a connection to the crowd that feels ethereal. as elevates it. We can’t wait until she returns to Sacramento.
