Lost Frequencies & Bastille collab for “Head Down”

Sometimes, you may not realize how much you crave an uplifting and energizing deep house track in January until music luminaries Lost Frequencies and Bastille join forces with "Heads Down." This song is the perfect companion to navigate through the January blues.

Lost Frequencies, also known as Felix De Laet, is a Belgian DJ and producer who gained widespread acclaim in 2014 with his chart-topping hit "Are You With Me," conquering charts in 18 countries. This year, the renowned producer continues to bask in international success with his third album, "All Stand Together," featuring standout tracks like "Where Are You Now" featuring Calum Scott and "The Feeling."

On the flip side, Bastille is the British festival-perfect quartet that achieved mainstream success in 2012 with their fourth single, “Flaws.” Shortly thereafter, they skyrocketed to international fame with the 2013 hit "Pompeii" and have maintained their status as one of the most popular names on UK festival lineups ever since.

Dropping on January 3rd, 2023, "Heads Down" is a seamless blend of Lost Frequencies' distinctive heart-capturing tropical house sound and Bastille's alternative and euphoric approach to indie. So much so that upon initial listen, it feels like an exclusive Bastille offering, only for subsequent listens to reveal the unmistakable Lost Frequencies production that we've come to know so well. The fusion is executed so seamlessly that, after a few rounds, distinguishing one from the other becomes a delightful challenge.

The song is aptly described as "soul-opening and passionate," weaving through the nuances of gentle keys and a deep, bold melody. Its narrative revolves around heartbreak and the universal experience of life's ability to bring anyone to their knees. Yet, true to Bastille's style, this stark realism is juxtaposed with a sense of potential—the belief that things can improve. In the vocals of Bastille's Dan Smith, the assurance that "You're still young but know the best is yet to come, don't hang your head down" resonates, and as bassy synths take over, a wave of summer optimism seamlessly finds its place in the midst of the cold January air.

For many, the release of such a track at the start of the year, especially given the influential status of both artists, might have been unexpected. However, it prompts us to question why we adhere to the notion that such uplifting tracks are exclusively reserved for the summer. If anything, "Heads Down" is precisely what we need to kick off the new year on a positive note.

I would give this song 3 out of 4 stars and you can listen to the song here.
