Dodgers have acquired Ryan Yarbrough from the Royals.
Having faced disappointment in their efforts to acquire Detroit Tigers ace Eduardo Rodriguez, the Los Angeles Dodgers turned their attention to pitcher Ryan Yarbrough, completing a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
The Dodgers' pursuit of Rodriguez was hindered by his utilization of a no-trade clause to block the potential transaction, as confirmed by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Roberts expressed his surprise at Yarbrough's willingness to join a team where he's familiar with fellow players and has the opportunity to compete for a championship.
In the preceding week, the Dodgers had made trades for pitchers Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly. However, they fell short in landing some of the marquee names available before the trade deadline.
Dodgers' President of Baseball Operations, Andrew Friedman, noted their proactive approach in pursuing top-tier talents, while adopting a more budget-conscious stance for players who could enhance their roster depth.
Currently, the Dodgers are anticipating the return of three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw from a shoulder injury, and are also hoping for left-handed pitcher Julio Urías to overcome an issue with the index finger on his throwing hand.
"I'm confident in our team," Roberts emphasized. "While the pursuit of improvement is ongoing, our priority now is to restore the health of our players. We possess a highly skilled roster." The Los Angeles team anticipates the return of Walker Buehler in September following his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.
In the trade for Yarbrough, the Dodgers dispatched minor league infielders Devin Mann and Derlin Figueroa.
Yarbrough, aged 31, posted a record of 4-5, along with a 4.24 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 14 appearances (including seven starts) with the Royals. Notably, the left-handed pitcher played a pivotal role in the Royals' triumph over Minnesota, securing a sweep in a recent series.
Yarbrough has amassed experience spanning six seasons in the majors, previously contributing to the Tampa Bay team from 2018 to 2022. His career record stands at 44 wins and 36 losses, with an ERA of 4.32.
Roberts expressed uncertainty about Yarbrough's role, whether it would involve starting games or working out of the bullpen.
"A versatile pitcher who can integrate seamlessly with our team and provide stability," Friedman remarked.
In a separate transaction, the Dodgers engaged in a trade, sending left-hander Justin Bruihl to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for monetary compensation.
Bruihl had recently been designated for assignment by the Dodgers, a move undertaken to accommodate the arrivals of Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly. Throughout this season, Bruihl has maintained a 4.07 ERA, registering 19 strikeouts and issuing eight walks over a span of 24 1/3 innings. His association with the Los Angeles team spanned parts of three seasons.
Furthermore, the Dodgers executed another trade, this time dispatching right-hander Phil Bickford and left-hander Adam Kolarek to the New York Mets in return for financial considerations.
Bickford was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on the preceding Saturday. His performance during this season encompassed a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, accompanied by a 5.14 ERA across 36 games.
Kolarek's involvement in the majority of this season centered around Triple-A Oklahoma City. He completed his time there with a 0-3 record, showcasing an impressive 2.40 ERA over 33 games.
